My name is Serena Tagliacozzo and I’m a PhD Researcher at the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR), University College London (UK). My research interests focus on the communications that occur in the reconstruction phase following natural and man-made disasters. For my PhD research, I’m carrying out a study on the communications between government agencies and residents after the Canterbury earthquakes. I’m particularly interested in the role of social media as enablers of this communication. The research aims to gain a better understanding of the communication dynamics and gaps between authorities and residents during a reconstruction process.

the insurance fiasco

It is quite concerning that people outside Canterbury/New Zealand are interested to explore this important issue further. It should have been done years ago by scientists from Canterbury University. It is also telling that the outside world is gradually taking notice that communication wise something has terribly gone wrong between authorities and quake affected homeowners here in Christchurch. Of course it is seen as a politically sensitive topic here. Hopefully someone from the outside world can take a more objective stance of basis of the outcome of her research.
